History |
History is in evidence all around our district. The
Carmichael family have
lived here for over 700 years, having originally taken their name from the area
when surnames were first necessitated. The Estate is today still owned and
managed by descendants of the original Chief of the Carmichaels. Practically
all the buildings on the Estate are built of stone and over 200 years old, having
been extensively modernised. The 18th Century Carmichael mansion house,
now a ruin, sits in the woods in the centre of the Estate and is on the site of
the original 14th Century castle. |
|
Environment. |
All our cottages are in a perfect rural environment amongst
woods and fields with views of our rolling hills and streams. The Estate is rich
in wildlife and visitors may see roe deer, foxes, badgers, red and grey
squirrels, rabbits, hares, stoats and a vast variety of birds as well as farm
livestock including red deer. |
|
Location. |
Carmichael Estate lies about 5 miles south of
Lanark - a Royal
Burgh and a busy market town. By car one can reach Edinburgh or Glasgow
in about 45 minutes. Carmichael is well situated as a touring base being within
easy reach also of the Borders, Peebles, Stirling, Perth, Ayr, and Carlisle - all
only about one hours drive away.
|
Transport |
Transport to the area can be by coach - London to Abington and
Edinburgh to Biggar.
Local buses run every hour from Biggar
to Eagle Gates, Lanark
and return. Trains connect to Lanark from where one can hire a local
taxi. Most people will prefer to have a private car available to fully explore the
district. We are very accessible being only 4 miles from the M74 motorway.
Parking outside each cottage is on hard standing with room for 2 cars easily. |
|
Shops/restaurants |
Shops/restaurants are plentiful in Lanark
(5 miles) and Biggar
(8 miles). Milk is delivered to the door 3 times per week and grocery vans call on
Wednesdays. The Tinto Hotel, Wyndales Hotel and Lanark Loch Hotel (4
miles) have bars, restaurants and steakhouse style meals. The Estate
operates the Carmichael Visitor Centre
and farm shop on the A73 with Estate farm meats,
produce and other Carmichael souvenirs and tartan
always available. Open all day and every day, the centre provides a good
economic meal from breakfast to high tea and specialises in
Carmichael venison and other homemade Clan Farmhouse Kitchen specialities. |
|
Leisure |
Leisure attractions locally include 6 golf courses within 10 miles, fishing on
the Clyde, walking within the woods of
the Estate and on Tinto Hill, and to Corra Lynn falls at
New Lanark.
